Sri Lanka for it's strategic location in the Indian ocean and
it's Natural wealth attracted many foreign invaders Cholas from
South India, Kalingas from East Asia, Portuguese, Dutch
and British from Europe until 1948.
The Sinhala Kings always fought back in exile to regain the
throne. Some battles went on for years. The Capital was moved
to several places due to these invasions.
The Portuguese, Dutch and British ruled the Sea Side
arriving after 15th century. Non of the invaders were able to
capture whole country at any time until 1815. The British
were successful to make a deal with local leaders who were
against the The last Kandyan King Sri Wikrama Rajasinghe.
Unless for the cruelty of the King they would not have taken
the Kandy without a battle.
The British converted Sri Lanka to a democratic rule and
established a parliament in the later part of their rule.
